Competencies
As you may have seen from the website there are four levels of doctor working with Great Western Ambulance Service (GWAS).Levels 2 to 4 are relevant to BASICS doctors.
Until you are signed off at level 2, you should only wear observer on high visibility jackets. This is to allow you to gain experience in the pre-hospital arena without being expected to work as a pre-hospital doctor.
The level 2 and level 3 competencies can be signed off by Critical Care paramedics or HEMS doctors, during discussion or demonstration of skills on your shifts.
Level 4 skills can only be signed off by a HEMS consultant (Prof. Jonathan Benger, Dr. Phil Cowburn, Dr. Matt Thomas, Dr Simon Chapman, Dr. Curtis Whittle or Dr. Tony Bleetman). Level 4 skills may only be undertaken by doctors signed off at level 3, and with discussion with an on call HEMS consultant.
It has been agreed with GWAS that members will be covered to use skills up to the level which they have been signed off to.
